Dr. Anupam Debsarkar is currently  Associate Professor of the Environmental Engineering Division of the Department of Civil Engineering at Jadavpur University, Kolkata in India. He joined the university in 1999.

Dr. Debsarkar’s interest in environmental issues began during his student days when he was awarded his Master of Civil Engineering (Environmental Engineering) and Ph. D. (Engineering) by Jadavpur University. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Engineering, he continued his postdoctoral research at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, as an institute scholar. He has also served as Assistant Engineer at West Bengal Pollution Control Board. He has been involved as an expert in various committees formed on the broader environmental management and beautification of the city of Kolkata. Dr. Debsarkar has also worked as Research Team Member of “Arsenic Research Group” of University of California, Berkeley under Prof. Ashok Gadgil.

Dr. Debsarkar is engaged in research in the fields of water and wastewater treatment, air and noise pollution, hazardous waste management. Some of his research work includes: indoor air pollution, urban air and noise pollution, air pollution and its health impacts, arsenic contamination in ground water, especially with respect to management of arsenic-bearing sludge, different types of waste management like municipal solid waste, e-waste, and slaughter house waste. In his independent research capacity he has authored book-chapters and published over around 58 articles in peer-reviewed, leading professional journal. He is interested in multidisciplinary approaches to understanding environmental issues.
