Professor (Dr) Joyashree Roy is currently the National Fellow of the Indian Council in the Social Sciences (ICSSR) – the pre-eminent scholarship offered by ICSSR, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. She joined the university in 1991 and presently is aProfessor at the Department of Economics.In 2001, she took initiative to establish the Global Change Programme (GCP) – a platform that brings together young researchers from various fields to collaborate, interact and work on various fields of climate and resource economics and has been the Coordinator of GCP since its inception.
Professor Roy’s interest in Environment and Resource Economics began during her student days when she was awarded her PhD in Energy Economics by Jadavpur University. After obtaining her Ph.D. in Economics, she continued her postdoctoral research at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California, USA as a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Economics.Currently, Prof Roy is engaged in research in the fields of energy economics, environment economics and climate change. Some of her research work include: assessing energy demand, water quality demand, water pricing, urban infrastructure, development policy issues, and estimation of sustainability indicators, issues on informal sectors, natural resource accounting and valuation of environmental services especially with respect to coastal ecosystem. She is interested in exploring multidisciplinary approaches in understandingthe challenges of sustainable development.
Professor Roy is one of the Coordinating Lead Authors of the Industry chapter of Working Group III of the Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). She was among the network of IPCC scientist sharing the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to IPCC in 2007. She was also a member of the research team winning 5thPrince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water in 2012. She has been involved in preparation of various reports on climate change at international, national and sub-national levels including Stern Review Report, Global Energy Assessmentreport and the report on India’s GHG Emission Profiles etc. She serves as steering committee member in various national and international science-policy interactive platforms. She is also on the editorial boards of many international journals including Current Opinion on Environmental Sustainability and Environmental Development. She has authored/co-authored and edited a number of books and published around eighty articles in leading peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. She has traveled extensively for research collaborations and research capacity building.
