In 2001, the Global Change Programme (GCP-JU) was established at the Jadavpur University as an interdisciplinary research platform. Research at GCP-JU focuses on ‘global change’ – anthropogenic interference with the earth system and its impact on human societies, economies, ecologies etc. The programmeinvolves researchers from various disciplines -natural sciences, engineering and social sciences to collaborate and systematically address the multifaceted impacts of environment and climate change on human welfare, water and food security, lifestyle, industrial production and overall sustainability of the development pathways. The knowledge base thus created is expected to aid decision-making processes to be more efficient and equitable at international, national and subnational levels.  GCP-JU has been providing research inputs to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Millennium Assessment Report, Stern Review Report and Global Energy Assessment of IIASA, etc.

It works with several Ministries under the Government of India including the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Formerly, Ministry of Environment and Forests), Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. GCP-JU collaborates with various governmental and non-governmental institutions, industries and academia to organize seminars, training programmes and workshops that stimulate intellectual dialogue, facilitate policy making and add significantly to the existing knowledge on global change.

Professor (Dr.) Joyashree Roy who is currently the Bangabandhu Chair Professor at The Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok in Thailand took initiative to establish the Global Change Programme (GCP) – a platform that brings together young researchers from various fields to collaborate, interact and work on different aspects of climate change and environmental sustainability. She has been the Coordinator of GCP-JU since its inception until July 2018. Professor Roy has taught at the Department of Economics in Jadavpur University since 1991, and is presently on lien. She is associated with GCP-JU as Founder-Advisor since August, 2018.

Professor Roy is an eminent researcher with a global repute in the fields of energy economics, environmental economics and climate change. Professor Roy is one of the Coordinating Lead Authors of the Industry chapter of Working Group III of the Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). She was among the network of IPCC scientists sharing the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to IPCC in 2007.

   Our Vision

"The only way to solve the problem of climate change is through an integration of these issues with the regular development agenda of any country."
